Why can’t I install Power Pack 2 for Windows Home Server? This was the question that I asked myself ever since the update came out a several weeks ago. It didn’t make any since, I thought all of the updates would come down automaticaly or at least I could manualy force an update, but not in this case. Windows Home Server has been my solution for my families media experience ever since I gave up Direct-TV, and it has worked flawlessly (Except for a couple of bad drives). AND NOW I CAN’T GET THE UPDATE! GRRRR!!!!
Ok, its not that bad – but it is a little puzzling. Lets see if I can figure out what happened.
Problem:
Windows Home Server has a new update that solves several problems many users have with copying files and media streaming media to and from their Home Servers, but it won’t install! I did verify that I had power pack 1 installed, and as I remember it – I installed it the moment it became available. But after several atemps and patient waiting on my part asuming that Microsoft was rolling it out in stages or something, I decided to investigate further.
Solution:
Aparently my eagerness to install Power Pack 1 has come back to byte me. It seems that when PP1 was first released, it was released as a (PreRelease Canidate) As a result, prerelease software will not automaticaly update to new versions (Although thankfuly, the security updates were automatic). So the easy answer is to uninstall the prerelease version of PP1 and start the instalation process again. However, this time I will let it perform the process on its own.
I found a great web page that explains the entire process with screenshots for those who feel they need a step by step.

I wonder why you have to install PP2 when MS will require you to upgrade to
PP3 or Windows 7 for security?
